Property Description

Situated in an elevated position with 360° views over the countryside sits this magnificent twelfth century château set in 3.7 hectares of parkland. Dating from circa 1174 this is one of the oldest medieval castles in the Limousin with history dating back to the Knights Templar, and was originally built as a hilltop defense castle which still retains its vast original walled battlements. The South turret of the tower is carved with the Fleur de Lis in honor of the French members of the Royal family that resided at the castle over the centuries. The approach to the château is a long tree lined avenue planted in commemoration of the coronation of King Louis XIV. The château was constructed over an enormous vaulted cellar with the castle kitchen, and the beautiful original granite staircase running throughout forming the centrepiece of the château. The current owner has carried out substantial restoration work to the interior of the château over the past few years; there are remaining rooms to be completed. The main entrance to the chateau is from the west terrace and on the ground floor there are four very large reception rooms with fireplaces and many further original features, a room with fireplace in the tower, and a separate 17th century spiral staircase which was used by the servants. On the first floor there are currently eight bedrooms with bathrooms, although the rooms on this floor have been created with relatively recent partitions to provide maximum sleeping space when the château was previously run commercially, there is capacity for the floor to be remodeled if required. On the second floor is a fully renovated self-contained 3 bedroom apartment with living/dining room, kitchen and bathroom, and there are 3 further bedrooms which are currently being finished. The château is set high on a hill with secluded beautiful grounds of just over 3.7 hectares. Situated on the château's parkland is a detached fully renovated house, which is currently being run as a successful business Gite sleeping 5 persons and is registered with Gites de France. Photos of this can be seen at the end of photo sequence, the owner really wishes to stress, that renovation to the main castle has been done in keeping with its medieval history, modern photos seen are of the gite and the owners and staff accommodation, the renovation of this property so far has taken over 4 years, and is a credit to the current owners, with huge thought and effort going into every part of the renovation works before actually renovating. Set within the grounds there is also a detached 13 bedroom coach house on three levels which needs complete modernising internally, a small detached chapel, large indoor menage, barn and stables. The bulk of the renovation works has been carried out on this property its now just for the finishing parts to go, to be able to enjoy and reap the benefits of owning a genuine medieval chateau in the heart of the Limousin Countryside. The property is an absolute must to visit, as the photos serve it no justice, you need to be able to see and feel the stone staircase, that imposes you on arrival, feel the history in the rooms as you walk around and just imagine who stayed here over the many years.
